There is only one way to install an asphalt shingle roofing system, the AB Carnes Roofingsm way!

More About AB Carnes Roofing Methods:

AB Carnes Roofing sm is responsible for changing the standards in the residential and commercial asphalt shingle roofing industry, establishing benchmarks in materials used and installation methods. Here's how:

1. Installation methods: We do not install roofs over existing shingles. This procedure is outdated because faulty and defective roof decks cannot be properly inspected. If the deck is defective the nails will not hold the shingles in place, which can lead to blow offs. In addition, ice and water barriers cannot be properly applied. It is best to remove all the existing roof materials down to the roof deck. This allows for proper inspection of the roof deck and the replacement of defective decking.

2. Ice dam protection: AB Carnes Roofing installs ice dam protection six feet wide at the leading edge of the roof and three feet around all roof penetrations. Although most manufacturers recommend three feet, ice dams have been known to reach four or even five feet and our responsibility is to make sure you have the best protection available!

NOTE: Never chop or try to break an ice dam. Instead, pull the snow off the edge of the roof when it is fresh. Trying to break an ice dam damages the shingles. Call your insurance company as soon as you notice any stains on your walls or ceilings. Even with the best installation methods, ice dams can still cause damage if they are found in and around dormers, roof wall intersections, gutters and fascia boards.

3. Drip edge: We use only eight inch drip edge, not the five inch that most other companies use. We install new collars at all soil pipes and stove pipes if needed.

4. Chimney and wall flashing details: While most companies use black tar to secure the chimney flashing, AB Carnes Roofing has developed a procedure that makes them the leader in the roofing industry. We use a carbide saw blade and remove all the existing flashing at the base of the chimney, then we cut a new reglet in the brick and insert the new lead in place. The lead is secured with lead anchors, which are driven into the reglet. A joint sealer is used the make the reglet watertight. Before the lead is woven into the shingles, the base of the chimney under the flashing is wrapped with ice and water shield. Black tar is not flashing!
Any roofer using tar to seal chimney and wall flashing is an amateur at best and leaks will surely result.

5. HAND NAILED ROOFS ONLY: We are one the very few roofing companies that uses hand nailing for shingle installations. This method, while more costly is far more precise. Nail guns are faster than hand nailing, but they prevent the user from knowing whether the nail hit solid wood, a knot or a split board. Nail gun settings can change without the users knowledge leading to faulty installation of the shingles. This can lead to shingle blow-offs during just moderate wind conditions.

6. STORM NAILING: Storm nailing is NOW CODE in Essex County. That means shingles must be secured with SIX NAILS per shingle instead of the usual four nails.

7. Winter installations: We perform roof installations year round. While most people think of the spring, summer and fall as ideal times of the year to install a new roof, winter is actually the best time. The foliage around the house is in hibernation, the ground is frozen so there is no damage to manicured lawns and the cold weather keeps the shingles cool so they do not suffer scaring while the workers walk across the roof during the installation and the breaking down of staging equipment. We have been installing roofs during the winter months since our inception in 1977.
